Káťa Kabanová by Leoš Janáček, presented by Summer Opera Lyric Theatre at the Alumnae Theatre in Toronto. A three-act opera (1921, libretto by the composer after Ostrovsky) set in a small isolated Russian town on the Volga, depicting a repressive society where rules and appearances are everything. A powerful drama on freedom, oppression and suicide. Professional staging, Canadian singers, piano accompaniment. Opera format in Czech (English surtitles), around 100 minutes with intermission.
