The Suitcase Project

If you were forced to leave your home for good, what would you put in your suitcase? Photographer Kayla Isomura asked exactly that of more than 80 fourth- and fifth-generation Japanese Canadians and Americans, aged from babies to people in their early fifties. Their portraits sit beside the belongings they chose to keep, alongside filmed interviews and context on the history of Japanese internment and incarceration. On view at the Museum of Vancouver until November 8, 2026.
