What sets Vancouver apart is how close its headline attractions sit to downtown, wedged between rainforest, mountains and ocean. On the North Shore, Capilano Suspension Bridge Park sends visitors out over the canyon and up into the treetops, while Grouse Mountain lifts them by aerial tram to a summit with the whole bay laid out below. Further north on the road to Whistler, the Sea to Sky Gondola rises above the Howe Sound fjord near Squamish. In town, the Science World dome on False Creek will happily fill a rainy day with kids.

On the water, whale watching cruises head out in search of the orcas and humpbacks of the Strait of Georgia, and seaplanes take off from the harbour for a flight over the city and the Coast Mountains. If you'd like to get out of Vancouver without driving, day trips run to Victoria and Butchart Gardens by ferry, or up to Whistler along the Sea to Sky Highway.
