St. Boniface Cathedral in Winnipeg is the principal Roman Catholic church of the Archdiocese of Saint Boniface and a symbol of the Franco-Manitoban community. A first wooden church rose here in 1818. The majestic 1906 stone cathedral was gutted by fire in 1968, leaving only the facade, behind which a smaller new cathedral by architect Etienne Gaboury was built in 1972. The heritage site today hosts cultural events and experiences.
