The Ottawa School of Art traces its roots to 1879, when local figures under the patronage of Governor General the Marquess of Lorne and Princess Louise founded the Ottawa Art Association. Since 1983 the school has occupied a 1907 building in the ByWard Market, originally put up for the Ottawa Wine Vault Company. Its Main Gallery and Lee Matasi Gallery show professional and student work, and the George Street door is a familiar meeting spot for market walking tours.
