CKUA, Alberta's listener-supported radio network, began broadcasting from the University of Alberta in 1927, making it Canada's first public broadcaster. Since 2012 it has operated from the Alberta Hotel at 9804 Jasper Avenue, a heritage hotel taken down in 1984 and later rebuilt brick by brick downtown. Its acoustically treated performance space, with built-in stage lighting, holds 182 standing or 143 seated, and hosts concerts, vinyl dance parties and Winterruption YEG shows.
