About this event

Georges Island carries a remarkable past: it was part of the 'Halifax Defence Complex' from the mid-18th century right through to the Second World War. On site, interpretive panels and guides trace a fascinating history, from ancient times when the Mi'kmaq arrived in Kjipuktuk, the 'Great Harbour,' to the coming of the British in 1749, through the imprisonment of the Acadians during the Deportation of 1755 to 1763 and the protection of the city during both world wars. You will be able to take part in a guided tour of the island's underground tunnels, offered courtesy of Parks Canada. Travellers will also have the chance to glimpse a portion of the Halifax boardwalk, one of the world's longest urban boardwalks, which stretches the entire length of the waterfront, some 4 kilometres (2.5 miles). It is an outing that blends nature, heritage and the great stories of the Atlantic coast.
