Purcell King Arthur

Warrior kings and fair maidens, scheming sorcerers, seductive sirens, nymphs, and shepherds. This is the colourful cast of characters in John Dryden's imagining of an Arthurian tale - Arthur's love for the fair blind Emmeline, and his battle for her and Britain against Oswald, ruler of the heathen Saxons. Merlin and his Saxon counterpart Osmond turn to the magical arts to ensure the battle is full of unexpected twists and turns. Henry Purcell sets the fable in a musical landscape, replete with stirring choruses, charming songs, spirited dances, compelling duets, and scenes of enchantment. Our special guest R.H. Thomson narrates Dryden's fantastical tale as the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Choir are joined by a cast of soloists to bring Purcell's evocative music to life. A musical fairy story, a tale full of magic, humour, and spectacle.
