About this event

Come along with us to discover the heritage of the Lighthouse Route and the stories hiding behind Peggy's Cove, Mahone Bay and Lunenburg: when and why these places were settled, the history of the fishery and the natural history of the Atlantic Coast. You will see how the coastline, the geology, the landscapes, the climate and the natural resources have sustained these communities for roughly 250 years, from shipbuilding and fishing to the gold rush of the 1800s, aquaculture and Christmas tree farming. We will walk you through the 'who, what, when, why and where' of the settlements founded by foreign Protestants, the economic contrasts between the in-shore fishery of Peggy's Cove and the off-shore fishery of Lunenburg, the local architecture, and the triumphs and tragedies of wooden ships and iron men. Explore at your own pace or join our complimentary walking tour of Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg's UNESCO World Heritage Site.
