Together with Parliament Hill, Montcalm and Saint-Jean-Baptiste make up the Upper Town districts that begin at the western section of the Old Town fortifications. In the past, Saint-Jean-Baptiste was a working-class district while Montcalm was favoured by the elite. Plenty of traces of that past still remain, yet both areas are now lively urban neighbourhoods where people of every kind mingle. Over recent years, Montcalm has rebranded itself as the District of the Arts (Quartier des arts), and Saint-Jean-Baptiste has drawn in numerous small, independent businesses, among them a few trendy fashion stores, a great pub serving craft beers and an amazing coffee house.
