Grizzly Bear Expedition

Departure takes place from our Campbell River Marine Adventure Centre, aboard our covered, heated and comfortable vessels, for a scenic

1. hour crossing to Bute Inlet. Once you arrive at the dock in Orford Bay, a
2. hour land-based experience begins, led by members of the Homalco First Nation. These local Indigenous guides take you by bus to various raised viewing platforms and well-placed ground-level spots, to try to catch sight of the magnificent grizzly bear, elk, bald eagles and other species. Every year, between August and October, the grizzlies gather in the Orford River valley to feed on the spawning salmon in preparation for the long winter hibernation. On the trips to Bute Inlet and back, you might also come across killer whales, humpback whales, dolphins, porpoises, black bears, seals, sea lions and a range of colourful sea birds, all within an unspoiled natural setting. Lunch is served in Orford Bay, with an unobstructed view over the estuary and its spectacular mainland mountain surroundings.
