The shape of the Bay of Fundy and the prevailing ocean currents combine to produce the highest tides on Earth. See what happens when 3,680 billion cubic feet of water surge in and out of this "funnel" not once but twice a day: boats and even ocean-going ships can be left stranded, high and dry. Wide tidal flats exposed at low tide are just waiting to be explored. That's exactly how Hall's Harbour got its start back in 1779, as a pirate base for the local scoundrel Samuel Hall, his Mi'Kmaq partner and a band of ruthless Yankee privateers who preyed on the Planters and Loyalists to the British Crown. Finally, bear in mind that this is a genuine fishing village, one that earns its living from the sea rather than a set built to please tourists.
