Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary visit, near Cochrane
Calgary, AB
Experience
The day opens with a scenic drive of roughly 1.30 hours between Calgary and Drumheller, where Alberta's prairies give way to the dramatic canyons of the Badlands. The first stop is Horseshoe Canyon, a striking U-shaped valley lined with layered cliffs and hiking trails. You then visit the world-renowned Royal Tyrrell Museum, home to one of the largest collections of dinosaur skeletons, before a short hike on the Badlands Interpretive Trail. A stop at the tiny Little Church comes just before heading into town, where the
26-metre-tall World's Largest Dinosaur stands. Next you wander Drumheller's Downtown Plaza for its shops and snacks, then have lunch at a local café. The afternoon is given over to the Hoodoos Trail, with its iconic mushroom-shaped rock formations, and to the historic Star Mine Suspension Bridge. If time allows, you discover the Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site (note: closed for the season; on closures, we visit the Last Chance Saloon). It all wraps up with a scenic sunset drive back to Calgary.
