Aster Aweke — Ethiopian singer-songwriter born in 1961 — plays Edmonton. Nicknamed the "Queen of Ethiopian Music", she's been one of Ethiopia's leading voices since the 1980s. She emigrated to the United States in 1981 (Oakland and then Washington DC) and released her first international album Aster on CBS Records in 1989 — a blend of jazz, soul, gospel and Ethiopian musical traditions. Over 26 albums and 250 songs, including Hagere (1999) and Fikir (2006).
