Formed in Hertford, England, in 1968, Deep Purple stand alongside Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath as architects of hard rock. Machine Head (1972) and the immortal riff of "Smoke on the Water" shaped generations of guitarists, while "Highway Star" and "Child in Time" showcase the band's fusion of Hammond organ and instrumental firepower. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, they remain a working touring band.
