Death Cab for Cutie formed in Bellingham, Washington, in 1997 as a home-recording project by singer-guitarist Ben Gibbard before growing into one of American indie rock's most recognisable bands. Transatlanticism (2003) and the platinum-selling Plans (2005) made their melodic, melancholy songwriting a fixture of the era. Their eleventh album, I Built You A Tower, is their first for Anti- Records after two decades on Atlantic.
