Calema are brothers António and Fradique Mendes Ferreira, born in São Tomé and Príncipe and based in Portugal. Their name refers to the heavy Atlantic swell, a fitting image for music that blends afrobeat, pop and traditional sounds, always sung in Portuguese. After winning a national Santomean music competition in 2008, they turned professional and now tour theatres across Europe.
